Video Game Advertising Gives Strategy Card Games A New Look
Video game advertising is an art unto itself, whisking away the consumer on a journey that hasn’t exactly been forged yet. Each game, each player and each time you play creates a unique experience. That being said, the ability to show consumers the possibilities isn’t excruciatingly difficult, since gameplay motion graphics, actions and capabilities are visually and technically exciting and alluring. Easy, right? Well, not so fast…
What happens when a video game isn’t necessarily active? (Whaaat?) Motions are limited? (No way!) Graphics are not nearly as compelling? (Really?) How do we create a dynamic ad using gameplay that is not naturally dynamic? This was our challenge when Wizards of the Coast came to Eyestorm Productions to create and produce an exciting and appealing release trailer for Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014. This highly successful, strategy-based card game needed to be infused with more energy and drama, as it transitions to an online presence. Since video game advertising is one of our beloved specialties at Eyestorm, we were more than excited to take the understated enjoyment of a strategy card game and bring it to digital life.
By harnessing the Dr. Frankenstein concept of “Bringing To Life“, we did just that to the once inanimate card game with the underlying promise of the power that Magic the Gathering cards have always delivered. Each approach and technique in creating the trailer had to illustrate the energy and excitement of Magic The Gathering that isn’t something usually seen, but rather internally experienced by the game player, himself. We made in the intangible, tangible with advanced editing techniques, bringing a sensory thrill to the simplicity of card play. We enticed aurally with atmospheric driving music and visually with beautiful motion graphics. We highlighted new and special features like the sealed deck and revealed other additional features that players have always wanted incorporated in the online game.
Our imaginative take on video game advertising was not only a fun challenge, but also rewarding. Both conventional Magic The Gathering fans and traditional action-packed video game players alike were drawn to Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014. A 30% growth in the MTG Brand was proof. Magic The Gathering is the #1 selling card game franchise and can now add the #1 spot for digital card game franchise to their repertoire, as well.
